We’re hearing about layoffs, freelancers experiencing a down-turn in business–everything you’d expect in this horrible economy. How is it affecting you?

I retired a month ago. That has given me a pitance to work with from a pension I accumulated before 1978. It’s more than nothing.

Navigating this economy is a real challenge for designers like myself who don’t have big name notariety but have a solid portfolio and a drive to work. Many companies that hired freelancers on their gigs in the past are tightening and using staff people full time.

You can’t blame them - I’d be doing the same thing.
