Everyone aware of the RF Spectrum “Land Grab”?
Posted by karlw Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

As you are probably already aware, there are some changes in the works for our valuable RF spectrum. This is the “space” used by all wireless microphone systems in use today, i.e. the UHF band. The FCC has already auctioned off or re-allocated the spectrum between 698-806MHz, and received 19 Billion (that’s Million with a B) for it. Winning bidders include ATT, Verizon, etc.

In addition to that, Google, Microsoft and other companies are vying to get access to the “White Spaces” which are the “unused” parts of the spectrum between active TV channels. The only catch is, those are not unused (all wireless mic systems are in there, remember?), and thus should be called “gray” spaces. That’s where the fun starts. Google has begun a marketing campaign to gain public favor and get wireless mics out of there, or at least stop the NFL, Broadway, TV networks, etc. from making it so difficult for Google to get that access.

Up to now, the FCC has stated that whatever devices would be using the “white spaces” must sense any active TV stations or wireless mics. The problem is, these devices have so far failed every test in that regard.

Here are some recent developments along those lines that you should be aware of:
